Preview to the Weekend, from the Oldham Chronicle...
Early-season heroics put Royton in frame
ROYTON, who made the most of a welcome window of opportunity last weekend, will
be aiming to confirm their early-season
status as CLL title contenders when they travel to Norden tomorrow.
Lee Gibbons' rapidly-improving side raised a few eyebrows on Sunday when they
defeated Heywood by six runs at Crimble.
All the other Sunday games were rained off, but the 25-overs game at Heywood
produced a positive result and it was the Dion
Taljard-inspired visitors who stole a march on the rest of the CLL clubs and
lifted themselves into third place in the table.
Royton's performance merely underlined their early-season promise and Gibbons is
confident there is much more to come.
We've been doing everything right so far - batting, bowling and fielding well,
he said.
South African Taljard, a successful professional with Heyside in the Saddleworth
League a few seasons ago before starring for
Tonge in the Bolton League, will only be able to play a limited number of games
because of work commitments.
He is not available tomorrow, but has already looked a valuable addition to a
side very much on an upward curve.
Said Gibbons: Matthew Ward, who is 21 today, has been doing well opening the
batting and Warren Teall, who missed the first
five matches because of his honeymoon, came back into the side and made runs at
Heywood.
The other batsmen are doing well, too. I batted at four last season, but was at
five on Sunday. If you miss out there are others
waiting to take your place higher in the order.
Among those are professional Iqbal Imam whom, according to Gibbons, is looking
good and sure to make a big score soon.
Tomorrow may be the day for Imam to impress - with bat or ball - and Gibbons has
no doubt his side has the ability to beat last
season's third-placed club, for whom professional Asif Mujtaba is such a pivotal
player.
They are not as strong as last season, said Gibbons. If we keep playing as we
are, we can win again.
Royton have an open date on Sunday, but go to Burnley on Monday for a
second-round match in the Inter-League Club Challenge Trophy.
