HAD there been a man of the match adjudicator at The Paddock on Saturday he
would have had the easiest of tasks. Milnrow youngster Ben Royds destroyed the
Royton batting line-up with six for 47, off 13 overs, then hit an unbeaten 46 in
a partnership of 85 with professional Shadab Kabir to ensure the points for the
visitors.
Royds did it in some style as four of his victims were clean bowled. He hit
seven boundaries and could have reached his half century, but a wide
ball when Royds was on strike and needing four runs saw Milnrow past the winning
post.
Royton lost the toss and were invited to bat by Milnrow skipper Peter Jones. It
looked a decision that might backfire as Warren Teall and Matt
Ward passed the 50 mark in 14 overs. Mark Wakefield removed both, but Iqbal Imam
and Paul Hughes had taken Royton past the 100 mark when Royds joined the attack
as fifth change.
A collapse ensued as Royds bowled Hughes for 12 and Wakefield bagged the
dangerous Dion Taljard for a duck. The writing was on the wall for Royton as
Imam also capitulated, bowled by Royds for 31. Wickets fell at regular intervals
and 101 for two swiftly became 128 for eight. A late flurry by Martin Bell (21)
helped his team's cause, but a score of 158 never looked enough. Wakefield, with
four for 55 off 24 overs, was also on form with the ball.
Milnrow's reply started slowly and with the score on 13 Lane was unlucky to
see his timbers rattled by Lovell. Graeme Hill
stuck around and had added 23 with Kabir when he edged
Bell to Taljard at slip. Andy Butler (14) was bowled
by an over aggressive Taljard and after a juggling exhibition among
the slips Stephen Hall was pouched by Teall without troubling the
scorers.
That was to be Royton's last success as Kabir, who hit 11 fours and one six
in his 66 not out, and Royds guided Milnrow to victory.
