Middleton Guardian
MIDDLETON went into last weekend hoping for a yield of points from their
games against Royton and Werneth.
But all they got were two points from Sunday’s washed-out fixture with Werneth.
On Saturday, Royton were dismissed for only 137, but even that proved too much
for the Moonrakers.
Royton started slowly, scoring at around two an over, but after the first wicket
had gone down Iqbal Imam injected some urgency into the innings.
Opener Clarke grew in confidence, but he then mistimed a drive and gave Sajith
Fernando a catch.
Nigel Doyle took a great catch off his own bowling to dismiss Imam for 19, and
overseas amateur Tony Percy was run out.
The Royton innings looked decidedly rocky, but a spirited 34 from Gibbons, and
22 from Bell, who was dropped by John Punchard early in his knock,
helped them crawl to 137.
Middleton’s reply got off to a quickfire start. Kumara and Fernando put on 30 in
five overs.
Kumara perished when he tried to sweep Imam and top-edged a dolly catch to Guy
Lovell.
Jimmy Ryan and Fernando took the total on to 54 before impatience got the better
of the pro. He went down the track to Lovell and was easily stumped.
Ryan made 20 before being bowled by Imam. Punchard made a gritty 23 not out as
he tried to hold the innings together, but the inexperience of the lower
order was exposed and Middleton fell seven short of their target.
