Oldham Evening Chronicle
Skipper is hero in cup drama
ROYTON booked a John Willie Lees Wood Cup quarter-final date with Crompton
thanks to a thrilling last-over triumph against Oldham at the Pollards
yesterday.
And it was Captain Marvel Lee Gibbons who steered them to victory with an
unbeaten 61 after Oldham had looked set to record their first success of the
season.
Chasing 230 for victory, Royton looked to be on the ropes following the loss of
key batsmen in professional Neil Broom and overseas amateur Anthony Percy.
But Gibbons, coming in to bat at 129 for four, turned the tide for Royton
despite losing batting partners in Ryan Harding, Mark Woodward and Simon Webb.
Three sixes from Gibbons put Royton within sight of victory and the skipper
collected the five runs he needed off Mark Charlton's final over, hitting the
fifth ball over the top after Jason Maher had brought his field in to prevent
the single.
That was tough on Oldham who had seemed to be heading for victory for much of
the game.
After taking first guard, Oldham slipped to 40 for three, but a fourth-wicket
stand of 127 between overseas amateur Charlton and professional Martin Smith
gave the hosts the upper hand.
Charlton (80), was one of five victims for wicket-keeper Gareth Lees while Smith
(60) was the last of three wickets grabbed by Percy as Oldham made a
highly-respectable 229 for nine from their 50 overs.
That score looked to be a winning one for much of the Royton innings – until
Gibbons' man-of-the-match contribution.
