Player Profiles
NAME: Matthew Ward
NICKNAME: Wardy
RESEMBLANCE TO: King Kong
FAVORITE FILM: Shawshank Redemption
FAVORITE TV: Eastenders
FAVORITE DRINK: Carling
FAVORITE CRICKET BRAND: Newbury
HOBBIES: Football and golf
MOST LIKE TO MEET: David Beckham and George W Bush, (his speeches are just
tremendous)
AMBITION: To be as good a fielder as Guy Lovell
MOST FEARED OPPONENT: Asif Mujtaba, played against him for 4 years and I don’t
think we have got him out before he gets a ton
SPORTING HEROES: David Beckham
FUNNIEST MOMENT: Matt Kennedy’s dismissal at Middleton in 2001. There was a big
shout for LBW and much to his well disguised shock the JD and Coke man saw the
finger of death. In disbelief, Kennedy eventually started to leave the field,
repeatedly waving his bat and shrugging his shoulders, around 30 minutes later
he finally left the field of play to the crowds abuse, “get off the field, you are
out you fat git” (slightly toned down !)
FUNNIEST DRESSING ROOM MOMENT: I’ll have to go with the same moment as team mate
Paul Hughes, Mick Whelan jumping from the bench and landing on the cricket bat
handle, which disappeared up his rear end. The problem here was that it was my
bat, a bat I subsequently donated to the man himself
BEST QUOTE HEARD IN CRICKET: After a 20 minute tactical team talk before a game,
Nobby saying “so what’s the crack then ?”
WORST MATCH: Royton vs Middleton, semi Final of the Wood Cup, 2001. From a
promising position of having Middleton at about 100/6, we let it slip and they
ended on around 270, killing the game off. We went on to be approximately 110
all out.
BEST MATCH: Royton vs Radcliffe 2002, great win in nail biting style, and of
course, my maiden first team 50
WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF: Fielding and my Mam
MOTTO IN LIFE: Enjoy life, live long and prosper

MOST FEARED OPPONENT: Denny Hulme aka Ellen Mcarthur
SPORTING HEROES: Simon Svabic
FUNNIEST DRESSING ROOM MOMENT: Alan Clarke falling asleep at Norden in the
changing room before rolling over to fall to the floor from a bench
BEST QUOTE HEARD IN CRICKET: It just about sums it up! - Alan Clarke after
taking a catch at the paddock but unfortunately falling over the boundary
before leaving the field of play in disgust to share a pint with David Rawstron
WORST MATCH: Middleton Under 18's away needed 1 from 2 balls - I blocked both
balls and declined a run to up my average
BEST MATCH: Milnrow Under 13's away - hit my only ever six
WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF: Golden Ducks !
MOTTO IN LIFE: 'Seize the day!'
