The History of the Central Lancashire League
Founded in 1892 under the title of the South-East Lancashire Cricket League, the Central Lancashire League adopted it’s present title one year later and has been a bulwark of Lancashire league cricket for over one hundred years. Nine clubs constituted the League in it’s initial season, and of these, seven remain. Heywood, Littleborough, Milnrow, Royton and Walsden being foundation members with an ever-present record, with Oldham and Radcliffe absent for a number of years, only to return to their first love.
Bury, Todmorden, Darwen, Dukinfield, Glossop, Longsight, Moorside, Stalybridge, Castleton Moor and Stockport are all past members of the League. The league’s membership has never been below the eight mark of the 1897 season, reaching 14 in 1907 and resuming at this number in 1937. In 1981 the membership was increased to 16 clubs with the addition of Norden and Hyde. Unsworth joined the League in the 1989 season. Hyde resigned in 1992 and Stand joined in 1993.
The Rev. J. R. Napier, Vicar of Walsden, and a prominent Public School cricketer was the League’s first President, and throughout it’s history the Central Lancashire League has enjoyed the patronage of presidents who have taken a leading part in the activities of the League, which is governed by two representatives from each completing club, with the addition of a President and a Chairman.
